SFD Background and Philosophy

My baking philosophy is very simple and is rooted in the memories I have of baking pies and cakes with my mother as a young girl, beginning at the age of eight. Through many years of lopsided, not-so-perfect birthday cakes and burnt cookies, I grew both in the knowledge and appreciation of the art of baking.

I grew up on a farm surrounded by growing things -- lots of open land, fresh air, Farm tractor and a sense that people's lives flowed with the gentle currents of nature. My dad, the son of a farmer, tended a huge vegetable garden. Varieties of fresh veggies were always on our dinner table, and those that we couldn't eat ourselves we shared with neighbors and family.

Mom had strong feelings about what we used to fuel our young bodies, and being a great baker herself, we were often treated to fresh baked cakes and cookies. Rarely if ever did we eat twinkies or fast food. And mom taught all of her children to cook and bake. (Even my brothers make a mean carrot cake!)

From this early nurturing, I gained a tremendous respect and love for the superior flavor and comfort found in fresh foods and fresh home-baked goods. As a result, at Simply Fine Desserts, I use only the freshest ingredients, believing that the love shows through in how my desserts look, smell, and taste.

I love to bake, and it brings me great joy to be able to share this simple passion with others. My hope is that when someone takes a bite out of one of my desserts, the resulting smile will serve to brighten the day...
